ไม้ไผ่กับวัฒนธรรม : พิธีกรรมและความเชื่อ

งานไม้ไผ่ที่ใช้เกี่ยวกับพิธีกรรมและความเชื่อไม้ไผ่มีความสัมพันธ์กับความเชื่อของชาวเอเซียมาช้านาน โดยเฉพาะชาวจีนและญี่ปุ่นนั้น ไผ่เป็นไม้มงคลและเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความแหลมและเจริญงอกงามของสติปัญญาดุจเดียวกับความแหลมคมของหนามไผ่ หน่อไผ่และการเติบโตอย่างรวดเร็ว

          สำหรับคนไทยนั้น ไม้ไผ่ได้เข้ามาเกี่ยวข้องกับวิถีชีวิตตั้งแต่เกิดจนตาย เช่น คนไทยโบราณมักสร้างบ้านด้วยไม้ไผ่ เมื่อทารกคลอดออกมาจากครรภ์มารดาวินาทีแรกที่เรียกว่า ตกฟาก นั้นเพราะทารกตกลงบนพื้นเรือนที่ทำด้วยไม้ไผ่ที่สับเป็นซี่ๆ ที่เรียกว่า "ฟาก" นั่นเอง

          หลังจากนั้น เมื่อถึงเวลาตัดสายสะดือหมอตำแยก็ใช้ไม้ไผ่มาผ่าเป็นซีก แล้วรนไฟ เพื่อใช้ตัดสายสะดือทารก แทนการใช้เหล็กหรือของมีคมอื่นๆ ความเชื่อนี้มีอยู่ทั่วไปในหลายประเทศในเอเซีย หลังจากตัดสายสะดือแล้วคนไทยจะนำเด็กนอนไว้ใน "กระด้ง" ซึ่งสานด้วยไม้ไผ่คลุมด้วยแหและเพื่อป้องกันผีร้าย สิ่งเหล่านี้เป็นความเชื่อเกี่ยวกับไม้ไผ่ที่มีมาช้านาน
          เมื่อเกิดอยู่นานร่างกายชราภาพก็ต้องใช้ไม้ไผ่มาทำเป็นไม้เท้า ครั้นถึงเวลาตายก็ต้องนำศพไปวางบนแคร่ไม้ไผ่ เวลาเผาศพ ก็ต้องตัดไม้ไผ่ลำตรงๆ สดๆ สำหรับแทงศพกลับไปกลับมาเพื่อให้ไหม้ให้หมด เรียกไม้ไผ่ชนิดนี้ว่า "ไม้เสียบผี"
